TPE\TPR Granulation, Corresponding Selection Experience of Hard Segment Materials

In the TPE/TPR granulation process, the selection of hard segment materials directly affects the physical properties and processing performance of the product. The following are relevant experiences:

1. Optional hard segment materials

The hard segment materials available in TPE/TPR granulation mainly include:

1. Polystyrene (PS): It has good transparency, processing performance and hardness, and is one of the commonly used hard segment materials in TPE/TPR. PS has good compatibility with SBS. When a small amount is added, the hardness does not increase significantly, but when a large amount is added, the hardness increases sharply, and phase transition is easy to occur.

2. Polyethylene (PE): According to different densities, it can be divided into high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). PE can improve the chemical resistance and electrical insulation of products and shorten the injection molding cycle, but a compatibilizer must be added when blending HDPE.

3. Polypropylene (PP): It has high strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and has good compatibility with SBS and SEBS. A small amount of addition can significantly increase the hardness of TPE/TPR.

4. Polyamide (PA): Also known as nylon, it has high strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and can make the product withstand greater mechanical stress. When blended with SEBS and SBS, it is necessary to add maleic anhydride grafted SEBS compatibilizer.

5. Polyester: It has excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance and mechanical properties, and can be used to manufacture high-performance TPE/TPR products. When blended with SEBS and SBS, it is necessary to control the relative molecular weight of the polyester hard segment and the polyether soft segment to achieve better compatibility.

2. Selection principles of hard segment materials

When selecting hard segment materials for TPE/TPR granulation, the following factors should be considered:

1. Product use: Choose the appropriate hard segment material according to the final use of the product. For example, for applications that need to withstand high temperatures, polyester or polyurethane with good heat resistance should be selected as the hard segment material; for products that require good transparency, PS or transparent PE can be selected.

2. Processing performance: Consider the compatibility of the hard segment material and the soft segment material, as well as factors such as fluidity and melt strength during processing. Materials with good compatibility can ensure the uniformity and stability of TPE/TPR products; while good processing performance helps to improve production efficiency and product quality.

3. Cost-effectiveness: Under the premise of ensuring product performance, the cost-effectiveness of hard segment materials should be considered. The prices of different hard segment materials vary greatly, and reasonable selection should be made based on actual needs and market conditions.

4. Environmental protection requirements: When selecting hard segment materials, attention should be paid to factors such as whether they contain harmful substances and whether they can be recycled and reused.
