How To Choose The Appropriate Pelletizing Method for Modified Granulation of Different Materials

When pure resin is "modified", the more suitable pelletizing method often changes

For example:


○ Filling, especially high filling, often makes LLDPE or LDPE granulation change from water ring cutting to air-cooled die face hot cutting. It not only increases rigidity, but also saves electricity (eliminating post-drying); the granule shape is both beautiful and reduces edge powder loss.


○ Reinforcement, due to the presence of glass fiber or carbon fiber, those resins that can be air-cooled and hot-cut (HDPE, ABS, etc.) are forced to fall back to traditional strand (water) cold cutting. "General" and "engineering" (plastics) are no exception.


○ Toughening, such as TPV bumper special material (PP+EPDM+POE dynamic vulcanization), because the rubber powder dispersed phase is dispersed in the PP continuous phase, water ring hot cutting becomes the first choice. It is both beautiful and saves money.


○ Reaction extrusion

(1) The first choice for chemical cross-linked cable material (XL-PE) is air-cooled die face hot cutting. In many cable material factories, twin-screw/single-screw two-stage machine + air-cooled hot cutting (or eccentric hot cutting) is the standard configuration for SPVC and XLPE compatible production. (2) In the production of high melt strength polypropylene (HMS-PP), PP can easily accept water ring hot cutting pellets after reactive extrusion branching.
 

Examples of pelletizing selection for common modified special materials or masterbatches

○ For SPVC cable insulation or transparent medical special materials, the first choice is air-cooled die face hot cutting. RPVC is also the same, but the output is smaller.


○ For polystyrene, whether HIPS or GPPS, most of them choose cast belt (inclined water cooling) pelletizing line.


○ For ABS special materials, most of them choose strand (water) cold cutting (slender pellets are the most popular). We have tried air-cooled hot cutting or water ring hot cutting, all OK, and the pellet shape is also beautiful (there are perfect spheres). When the production capacity is greater than 3-4t/h, it is natural to change to underwater hot cutting or cast belt machine.


○ For shielded or semi-shielded cable materials, small ones choose water rings, and large ones choose underwater (hot cutting).


○ For silane cross-linked cable materials, small lines choose water rings, and large ones (such as 96/250 lines) choose underwater (hot cutting).


○ The production and pelletizing of HFFR (low smoke halogen-free cable materials) are compatible with XLPE equipment, but the screw configuration needs to be changed.


○ Polyoxymethylene (POM) end-capping, water ring or underwater (cutting) optional.


○ TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer), mostly choose underwater hot cutting, but the same direction flat double extrusion metering section must be adjusted for pressure building.


○ PET filament masterbatch, can be equipped with strand (water) cold cutting or cast belt cold cutting.


○ PPC (polypropylene carbonate), a popular emission reduction product, can be blended, mixed and granulated with almost every type of degradable resin (TPS, PLA, PBAT, PBS, PHBV, PHA, PVA, PCL, PGA).

Examples of pelletizing selection for the following polymers or modified materials

○ Impregnation method for long glass fiber (LFI-PP, LFI-PA) pelletizing.

Key points: impregnation head with twin screws, ironing strips, and dual-speed pelletizing.


○ Compounding and granulation of PE breathable film special materials;


○ Compounding and granulation of cellulose acetate mixed ester molding materials;


○ Compounding and granulation of TPEE (block copolyether ester rubber);


○ Production of K resin and granulation of modified materials;


○ Granulation or devolatilization granulation of SBS, SIS, SEBS and other styrene block elastomers;


○ Compounding and granulation of compatible toughening agents such as grafted POE and grafted EPDM;


○ Compounding and granulation of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) drilling special materials;


○ Compounding, granulation and micro-granulation of polyethylene wax (PEW);


○ Compounding and special granulation of petroleum resin (C5 or C9);


○ Compounding, extrusion and cutting of nylon (PA6+PA12+SiC) abrasive wire.
