Materials that Improving the Wear-resistance of Plastic

At present, all kinds of machinery, auto parts, especially the transmission, steering system generally need to install some simple structure but good wear resistance parts. In the selection of these parts, engineering plastics with excellent wear resistance will be usually considered.

Plastic compounded with a variety of wear-resistant additives improves its character of selflubrcating, and can reduce the pressure with the parts, thereby enhancing the wear resistance of the material.

Then what are these additives?

 1. Polytetrafluoroethylene

Also known as PTFE, Teflon. PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction in all additives. The PTFE molecules that grilled during friction form a lubricated film on the surface of the part. It is ideal for "non-stick coating" or "easy to clean material". It is commonly used in piston ring seals, thrust washers, clean water pipes and so on.

  2. Molybdenum disulfide

Moly is also known as the "King of advanced solid lubricants". It is mainly used as a wear-resistant additive for nylon plastic. Molybdenum disulfide acts like a crystallizer to increase the crystallinity of nylon, resulting in a harder and more abrasion resistant surface. It has a high affinity for metals. Thus makes molybdenum disulfide an ideal wear-resistant additive for applications where nylon and metal friction with each other.

  3. Graphite

The chemical structure of graphite is a unique lattice-like structure. This makes it easy for the graphite molecules to slide on each other with little friction. It is particularly important in a watery environment. This feature makes graphite an ideal abrasion resistant additive for many applications in water, such as watercrackers, impellers and valueseals.

 4. Polysiloxane

Polysiloxane liquid is a moving wearable additives. When added to the thermoplastic, the additive will slowly move to the surface of the part and form a continuous film. Polysiloxanes have a wide range of viscosities, measured in centistokes.

 5. Glass fiber

Glass fiber is a hard and high scraping fiber. It provides a strong mechanical combination between the polymer function, so increase the overall structure of the thermoplastic thus significantly improving the resistance to wear and abrasion resistance of plastics.

 6. Carbon fiber

As with glass fiber, carbon fiber is able to significantly improve the integrity of the structure, wear resistance and wear speed. Unlike fiberglass, carbon fiber is a softer and less scratching fiber. Carbon fibers do not scratch the friction surfaces of iron or steel. High performance carbon fiber is the most important reinforcement for the manufacture of advanced composites.

 7. Aromatic polyamide fibers

Unlike fiberglass and carbon fiber, it is the softest and most scratchless fiber. This feature is the main advantage of aromatic polyamide fibers in wear-resistant applications.
