The main equipment required for TPE pellet production and its relationship with production scale are as follows:
I. Main Production Equipment
1. Screw Extruder
Function: The screw extruder is the key equipment in TPE pellet production, responsible for melting and extruding the mixed TPE material.
Types: Based on the number of screws, extruders are classified into single-screw and twin-screw extruders. Twin-screw extruders generally offer better plasticization, mixing uniformity, and production efficiency, especially when the formulation contains a high amount of fillers (e.g., calcium powder).
Selection: For small-scale production, a single-screw extruder can be chosen to reduce costs. However, as production scales up, twin-screw extruders should be used to enhance efficiency and product quality. When high dispersion and plasticization are required, such as in formulations with a high filler content or special additives, a twin-screw extruder is essential.
2. Pelletizer
Function: The pelletizer cuts the extruded strands from the screw extruder into pellets.
Types: Based on the cutting method, pelletizers can be classified as air-cooled pelletizers, water-cooled strand pelletizers, water ring pelletizers, and underwater pelletizers. Among these, underwater pelletizing is the most advanced, as it produces uniformly shaped pellets that do not stick together and operates under relatively stable conditions.
Selection: The choice of pelletizer depends on production scale, product requirements, and cost considerations. For large-scale production or applications with high-quality demands (e.g., TPE pellets requiring high surface quality or low hardness), water ring or underwater pelletizers are recommended.
3. Compounding Machine (or Internal Mixer)
Function: Used for mixing and plasticizing TPE raw material components to ensure uniform distribution and proper reaction of each component.
Selection: The choice depends on production scale and formulation complexity. For large-scale production or complex formulations, a high-performance compounding machine with enhanced mixing and plasticization capability is necessary.
II. Auxiliary Equipment
Apart from the extruder, pelletizer, and compounding machine, a complete TPE production line also requires the following auxiliary equipment:
1. Cooling System: Used to cool the extruded material from the screw extruder to prevent deformation or damage. The selection depends on production scale and material characteristics.
2. Drying Equipment: Removes moisture from SEBS and SBS to ensure product quality. It can also be used to eliminate moisture from long-stored TPE pellets. The choice should consider drying efficiency, energy consumption, and space requirements.
3. Conveying System: Used to transport raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products along the production line. It is generally required for medium- to large-scale production, with automation levels depending on production needs.
4. Testing Equipment: Includes tensile testing machines, hardness testers, density testers, etc., for measuring the physical properties of TPE raw materials and finished products to ensure quality compliance. The selection should align with product quality standards and testing requirements.
III. Relationship Between Production Scale and Equipment Selection
1. Small-Scale Production: A small-scale production setup can use single-screw extruders, small compounding machines, and manual or semi-automatic pelletizers. These low-investment and easy-to-operate machines are suitable for small-batch production and formulation research.
2. Medium-Scale Production: As production scales up, transitioning to twin-screw extruders, medium-sized compounding machines, and automatic pelletizers is necessary. These machines improve efficiency and product quality to meet market demand.
3. Large-Scale Production: For large-scale production, high-efficiency equipment such as large twin-screw extruders, advanced compounding machines, and fully automatic pelletizers should be used. Additionally, automated conveying and testing systems are recommended to achieve continuous and automated production while ensuring stable quality and high efficiency.
4. Contract Manufacturing: If a company lacks the necessary production capacity, TPE quality control, or testing capabilities, outsourcing to third-party manufacturers and testing facilities is an alternative solution.
